Love, Fear, and the Simulated Universe — Jeff Mishlove and Tom Campbell on the Simulation Question

Why the Speed of Light Might Be Your Reality’s Frame Rate

Jeffrey Mishlove’s YouTube channel New Thinking Allowed recently featured a fascinating seven-part series of interviews with physicist and consciousness researcher Tom Campbell, author of My Big TOE (Theory of Everything). While Campbell has appeared in many interviews in recent years, Mishlove’s conversations stand out for their depth, nuance, and thoughtful pacing. The first four videos provide a deep dive into Campbell’s story, while the following three address thoughtful audience questions.

This review focuses on the third video in the series, Are We Inside a Computer Simulation? with Thomas Campbell.

Physicist and author Tom Campbell (best known for My Big TOE: Theory of Everything) joins Jeffrey Mishlove, a parapsychology PhD, for a wide-ranging conversation on one of the most provocative questions in science and philosophy: Are we living inside a computer simulation?

Campbell’s answer is a bold: YES — his theory flips traditional science on its head: instead of matter creating consciousness, he proposes that consciousness is fundamental, and the physical world emerges from it. This idea elegantly ties together quantum physics, paranormal phenomena (like telepathy), and even spiritual experiences.

Campbell’s Model in Plain English

  • The Larger Consciousness System (LCS): An evolving information system that “hosts” multiple virtual realities (including our own). Each of us is an IUOC (Individuated Unit of Consciousness) logged into this simulation. The system’s goal: reduce entropy — which, in human terms, means growing toward love, compassion, and away from fear and ego.
  • Rendered Reality: Like a game engine, the LCS only “renders” detail when and where it’s observed. This dovetails with quantum experiments that suggest reality isn’t fixed until measured. Campbell has even co-authored proposals to test these rendering limits in physics labs. See the On testing the simulation theory paper at the International Journal of Quantum Foundations.
  • Psi & the Databases: Phenomena like telepathy, precognition, and out-of-body experiences are reframed as lawful ways of accessing the system’s information databases. The afterlife, meanwhile, is simply a transition into a different virtual reality with its own rule set.

Ethics play a central role here: our intent influences probabilities within the system. In Campbell’s model, love literally shapes reality.

Memorable quotes I found interesting in this video.

The Anthropic Cosmological Principle. Why is the Universe finely tuned for life.

The Anthropic Principle. Anthropic reasoning has been used to address the question as to why certain measured physical constants take the values that they do, rather than some other arbitrary values, and to explain a perception that the universe appears to be finely tuned for the existence of life.

The simulation is more than a metaphor.

It actually is a simulation. (~44:07)

What is the Speed of Light, and why it is constant.

It can’t go any faster than that. (~47:08)

But the Speed of Light does change.

Only at the 7th, 8th or 9th decimal place. (~50:25)

The Larger Consciousness System did it. (~1:08:22)

This interview is a thought-provoking dive into a reality where consciousness drives everything. Campbell’s blend of physics, philosophy, and parapsychology, backed by testable hypotheses, makes it a unique contribution to the simulation debate. Mishlove’s insightful questions keep the discussion grounded, making complex ideas more digestible. Whether you’re a skeptic or a seeker, this video challenges you to rethink reality and your place in it. Perfect for anyone intrigued by the big questions: Are we in a simulation? And if so, what’s the point? If you are open to them this video may contain some possible answers to these questions.
